Newcastle Financial Advisers, the financial advice division of Newcastle Building Society, has acquired Orchard Financial Management, a financial planning firm based in County Durham founded in 1998. This acquisition brings approximately 200 clients, strengthening Newcastle Financial Advisers' presence in the North East through its network of 32 branches.
Graeme Leigh, the founder of Orchard, noted that the buyer's commitment to a long-term, client-first approach was a key factor in his decision, aligning with Orchard’s legacy of personalised service and growth through word-of-mouth referrals. Additionally, this transition provides Orchard’s clients with access to a larger in-house support team and financial advice services available on the high street.
This local transaction highlights a more gentle approach to mergers and acquisitions, where succession planning is influenced by cultural alignment and the continuity of client care rather than by rapid consolidation or the pursuit of scale.
While the recent trend in the industry has leaned towards private equity-backed national consolidators, this deal emphasises the ongoing importance of community-focused firms and regional networks, particularly in supporting client retention and intergenerational planning.
